A glass railing looks like a design choice. It is a structural one. A guard exists to stop a person falling, and everything about how it's specified follows from that.
Below is what the code actually governs and what it means in practice. What it deliberately does not contain is numbers — heights and loads depend on your jurisdiction and your application, and a figure copied off the internet is how something fails inspection.
Four things the code governs
Height — how tall the guard must be, measured from the walking surface. Residential decks and commercial terraces are not treated the same.
Load — the force the guard must resist, both spread along the top and concentrated at a point. This is what decides thickness and how the glass is held.
Openings — how large a gap may be anywhere in the assembly. With full glass panels this is mostly about the gaps at the bottom and between panels.
Glass type — whether tempered alone is acceptable or laminated is required, which depends on the guard condition and whether there's a top rail.
Tempered, laminated, or both
Tempered glass is several times stronger than annealed and breaks into small blunt pieces instead of shards. That's why it's used for safety glazing. But when tempered glass breaks it breaks completely — the panel is gone in an instant.
In a guard, that matters. Laminated glass bonds two plies to an interlayer, so a broken panel holds together and stays in the opening. Laminated-tempered gives you both: the strength of tempered and the post-breakage retention of laminated. Where a fall is possible, that combination is what gets specified.
The base carries the guard, not the glass
In a frameless system the glass is a cantilever: it's held only at the bottom, and every bit of load applied at the top is transferred through that connection. The base channel or standoffs, and the structure they're anchored into, are doing the real work.
This is why retrofitting glass onto an existing deck isn't automatic. The question is never whether glass can do it — it's whether your framing can take the anchorage. That gets assessed on site.
Wind is a real load outdoors
An interior stair guard resists people. An exterior one resists people and weather. A long unbroken run of glass on an exposed hillside deck in Vinings or a rooftop terrace is a sail, and it gets specified accordingly — sometimes thicker glass, sometimes shorter panel spans, sometimes a different base system.
Ask these before the design is fixed
Which code edition does your jurisdiction enforce, and is this application residential or commercial? Is a graspable handrail required, and where? Can the existing structure take the guard load, or does framing need to change? Getting these answered at design stage costs nothing. Getting them answered by a failed inspection costs the glass.
Common questions
Do I need a top rail on a glass railing?
It depends on the system and the code path taken. A capped top rail is the more forgiving detail; a true frameless top edge is cleaner and asks more of the glass and the base. Both are done routinely — the choice affects appearance and cost more than safety.
Will a glass railing survive a Georgia storm?
Yes, when specified and anchored for the loads at your site. In a poor installation the failure point is almost never the glass — it's the anchorage into the structure.
Is glass more maintenance than pickets?
Honestly, yes — that's the trade for the view. Most owners wipe it down when they clean the windows. Near a pool or under heavy pollen, expect more. A hydrophobic coating slows the spotting; it doesn't remove the chore.
