Wine Cellar Glass
A glass wall that holds temperature — so the collection becomes part of the room.
A wine wall is the most-photographed thing in a modern house, and the least forgiving piece of glass in it. It has to be transparent enough to display the collection and thermally competent enough to keep a conditioned room at temperature — while staying clear when the room outside it is warm and humid.
That is why cellar glass is not shower glass. A conditioned cellar behind a single pane will fog on the warm side and force the cooling unit to run continuously. Insulated units and properly detailed seals are what make the wall work.
Most wine walls that disappoint don't fail as glass — they fail as an envelope. Insulated units, sealed doors, and coordination with the cooling equipment are what separate a display from a photograph of one.

Specification notes
- Insulated glass
- A conditioned cellar needs a dual-pane insulated unit, not a single sheet. The airspace between panes is what stops the outside face from dropping to dew point and fogging.
- Low-E coating
- A low-emissivity coating reduces heat transfer through the glass, which lightens the load on the cooling unit and helps hold a stable temperature.
- Clarity
- Low-iron glass matters more here than anywhere else in the house. Ordinary glass adds a green cast that shifts how the labels and the wine read — and displaying the bottles is the entire purpose of the wall.
- Seals and thresholds
- Doors need a proper seal at the perimeter and at the floor. An unsealed cellar door leaks conditioned air continuously — the cooling unit will run forever and the room will never hold its setpoint.
- Coordination
- Cellar glass has to be coordinated with whoever specifies the cooling equipment and the insulation. The glass is one part of a sealed, conditioned envelope — it cannot be designed in isolation.
Common questions
Will the glass fog up?
Not if it is built as an insulated unit for a conditioned room. Fogging on the outside face is the classic symptom of single-pane glass on a cooled cellar in a humid climate — which describes Atlanta most of the year. This is the single most important specification decision in the project.
Does the glass block UV?
Glass coatings and laminated interlayers reduce UV transmission substantially, and that helps. It is not a substitute for keeping direct sunlight off the bottles — position the cellar and its lighting accordingly.
Can you convert a closet or the space under the stairs?
Those are two of the most common cellar locations in a house that wasn't designed with one. Whether it works comes down to whether the space can be insulated and sealed and whether the cooling equipment can be vented — assessed on site with whoever is doing the cooling.
